✴Yarrow was used during the Civil War to staunch the bleeding of soldiers' wounds.

Yarrow (Achillea Millefolium) dates back to Achilles, a Trojan War hero, who was said to have used Yarrow on his soldiers wounds.  It is possible that the botanical name comes from that time period.
